The first annual Everybody Draw Mohammed Day seems to be a success so far. Was I disappointed that few dA community members participated? Yes, quite a bit, in fact. Was I proud of everybody who did? Absolutely.
This one's for Lars Vilks (PBUH). I figure it speaks for itself. I wanted to do something a bit different from the previous ones for the occasion. Didn't have a whole lot of time after I finished the day's work, so I went the iconographic route. Hope y'all dig it!
Whoops! Edited to add a Quranic verse that I particularly despise: "Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not."
I considered a more explicit call to arms against all non-Muslims (there are several in the book, for those who haven't read the actual text), but something about this one inflames my sense of humanity even more than exhortations to conquest. It's that whole shame-as-religion thing, and it's buttressed by the whole religion-is-a-tool-of-oppression thing. It's not very difficult at all to imagine a man in the Bronze Age Middle East sitting down and concocting such rubbish. Isn't it just like the ruling class to tell us that war is a terrible thing, a ghastly thing that offends our sensibilities, even as it sends out legions of troops to do its bidding? And isn't it so like religion to tell us that which pleases us most is something to avoid doing because it's "bad" for us.
Despicable, primitive nonsense, all of it.
