There's a Dark Horse series coming out next month that I was briefly involved with. Super low page rate, but really cool art that I nevertheless labored over in order to come up with an interesting piece of color design. It's a soupy '70s horror jag, so I figured a tasteful, kinda low-key Matt Hollingsworth style was in order. Eight unpaid pages later, the creator, who strikes me as a real B-tard, spikes the work amid a laundry list of complaints. She ended up going with somebody who was willing to crank in the usual McCaig/Bellaire style du jour, even though it seems to me that that's all wrong for this particular project. C'est la vie.
It was an interesting experience in a lot of ways, though, and I owe her a big thanks for making me commit to never doing another unpaid "test page" ever again, and for refusing to scrap a shitload of work in order to try something different that, for all anyone knows, might up end being scrapped all over again. This was the end of all that for me, and I'm better for it.
